Autumn Watch

Our piggies lead very busy lives, snaffling up the acorns that would other wise poison the ponies. Like all forest stock, best viewed from a safe distance, especially if Mrs.Pig is in the vicinity. Best places to spot, Nomansland, Bramshaw and Fritham areas. Spotting deer in The New Forest isn't always easy, but at Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary there is a purpose built viewing platform overlooking a large meadow area where a herd of fallow deer regularly gather.

Here are a couple of our favourites, all marked from the road with adjacent parking. Matley Wood, on the Beaulieu Road, a few miles outside Lyndhurst, a lovely ancient wood. Cadmans Pool, Stoney Cross, off the B3078 Brook to Fordingbridge. Lots of wildlife, lovely walks through the woods behind the pool. Millyford Bridge walk, Emery Down (Lyndhurst) to Bolderwood road, quite an adventure, so take an OS map, good dear spotting walk.

A bite to eat and a warm

The Royal Oak at Fritham, off the B3078 nr. Brook. A lovely little traditional pub, simple food, log fires, lovely strolls from the doorstep. The Yachtsman's Bar at The Master Builders Hotel, Buckers Hard, near Beaulieu. Good bar food and log fires, plus fabulous river views. Take the waymarked route starting from the waters edge, arriving in Beaulieu in time for a cream tea. The Oak at Bank, just outside Lyndhurst on the A35. Good food, log fires, pretty village setting, after lunch, have an amble down the lane with the ponies.

Setley Ridge Vineyard and local produce shop, just outside Brockenhurst on the A337. Delicious food, ready prepared meals and wine ! Hurray. Beaulieu Organic Farm Shop, on the B3005, another wonderful place for organic meat and poultry, fruit and vegetables. Local New Forest Farmers Markets, say hello to the person who produced your dinner, to be found at different forest locations every weekend, ask us for the list.
